Megan Miranda writes exceedingly well about the ongoing psychological effects of childhood trauma in The Girl From Widow Hills. At just six years old Arden already sleepwalks, often wandering outside far from home. One night she goes out in a storm and is swept into the drainage systems under the town. After much searching and three long days Arden is eventually found, physically not too badly damaged but suffering understandably from severe trauma which is intensified by the continued media interest over the years, particularly at the anniversary of her disappearance. Afterwards Arden takes medication to cope with the trauma and stop her sleepwalking. In order to escape the unwanted attention Arden changes her name to Olivia when she goes to college and has very little contact with her mother who wrote a book about her disappearance and appeared on television talking about it but developed problems of her own. When her mother dies of an overdose it takes some months for the news to reach Olivia, she then receives a small box of the items her mother had at the time of her death. Just a few nights later Olivia is found sleepwalking by her neighbour. It's also approaching the twentieth anniversary and she is concerned the media will find her even though she works in a different town using a different name. Worse is to come when she wakes one night to find herself outside with a dead body at her feet. What will become of Olivia? Is she responsible for this body, could she have killed someone? Olivia's nightmares have been horrendous but this could be a real waking nightmare. Can't wait to read what happens to Olivia next.
