Initially, I thought this would be a five-star read based on the first look and my reading tastes. Unfortunately, it was not as heart-racing as I expected.
However, I am significantly freaked out. Megan Miranda keeps twists coming, they come out of nowhere and they kept me on the edge of my seat.
This triller follows Olivia Meyer, formerly Arden Maynor, on the days leading up to the 20th year anniversary of her disappearance and miraculous rescue.
This book definitely does a good job of keeping me on my toes as I tried to piece the mystery together myself - I found it impossible which is why the climax left me creeped out, shivers down my spine.
The characterisation is fantastic. I stand by Arden/Olivia being a well-written protagonist. She is confronted by her past as it catches up to her on the 20th anniversary of the incident as many figures make a reappearance. We get to see how this influences her and how calculating and detached she is.
I really liked Bennett, he offers an outside view and shows what Olivia's life could be like once she moves forward and starts accepting friendship, rather than keeping her at arm's length.
It was really difficult for me to pin down exactly who had a hand in the events and who was entirely innocent. This is because it is written in the first-person perspective, we only know what Olivia knows. It was truly shocking when every twist hit and each new character was brought under scrutiny.
This was a fantastic read, and fairly quick and short for a thriller at just over 300 pages. I highly recommend it for thriller fans, it won't disappoint.
