I was unable to put this book down, reading late into the night despite the fact that the harrowing story gave me a sleepless night. I have read a lot about the Nazi occupation and their treatment of the Jewish population but very little about the occupation of Poland.

This book brought all the people to life, Misha, Sophia, Erwin, Sabina and all the others. You were able to picture them and their daily routine, both before and during the war years, which makes what ultimately happens to them all, all the more difficult to comprehend.

Dr Janusz Jorczak was a pioneer, his compassion for and treatment of the children in his care so unusual for those times, what a wonderful man. Reading about the happiness in the orphanage under his protection makes the thought of the ultimate march through the Ghetto very upsetting.

In my opinion this book, whilst a difficult subject matter, is necessary reading.
