I visited Warsaw last year after reading much about its wartime history and this book is exceptionally good in that it gives real detail on the years leading up to the outbreak of war and the disaster that Poland suffered. The sample pages here are fascinating and give a personal and very real perspective on what it must have been like to live through the dread and fear of the Nazi occupation. Whenever I visit a new city I look for a suitable book that can enhance understanding of where I am visiting and the Good Doctor of Warsaw would be a superb choice. Elizabeth Gifford captures one of the most striking aspects of the city in that nearly all of it had to be rebuilt after the war - often in its original eighteenth century style - and it was interesting to read in the sample pages about the destroyed areas.
