This book caused such a mix of emotions for me, one minute something horrific devastated me, but the next there was something to smile about. At first I was unsure about whether or not it was a true story, but the pictures inside the front and back covers and the explanation in the postscript confirmed that it was. This makes the story hit home so much harder than a work of fiction, every death or moment of suffering you read about really happened, and every new romance and chance for escape perfectly counterbalance these events so the reader isn't left completely emotionally destroyed, but strangely uplifted.

The way so many people never gave up, and tried so hard to help themselves and others, be that through smuggling food into the ghetto or bribing guards to give people a chance for survival, is both difficult and reassuring to read.

It captures the struggle to live and be happy during war, especially the plight of the Jews, so well. I absolutely loved it and I will be reading it again and again.
