Pretty familiar tropes.. but I wouldn’t toss it aside

It’s a fairly standard introduction, similar to many thrillers. Something happened in hometown in the past, traumatised protagonist, life (sort of) ruined.
Oh no it’s happening again! I must leave my family to put right whatever I did wrong!
Cliché after cliché. Close-to-irritating first-person present tense narrative!
There’s a reason why all this works: it’s that you want to know what happens even though on one level you already do.
Sounds like a perfect lockdown book....bring it on.
