The story alternates between then and now. In the now, the main character, Flick lives in the Lake District with her husband and daughters. She sees on the news that a girl has been abducted and is missing in her home town. She hasn't been back since she left there when she was younger.
She feels compelled to go back as the same thing happened when she was younger and she feels that somehow she can solve the mystery.
In the then, Jasmine and Flick are best friends from different home environments. Jasmine's parents are very laid back but she has a great home life. Flick's Mother loves a drink and has a stormy relationship with men.
That summer Jasmine's parent announce that they will have a lodger in the guest house. His name is Tim and he is decorating the house and doing odd jobs. Jasmine gets bad vibes from him, but her parents tell her to give him a chance. Over the course of a few days Jasmine and Flick's lives change forever.
