The story is set in a yard of houses situated under a cliff which is the boundary of an old monastery. Nell her husband Chris and stepdaughter Maude are staying in Elder house for a few weeks for an early summer holiday. Maude has been taken out of school for being involved in a bullying incident. They meet other residents of the yard and everyone seems friendly. Then the back story of the house begins to emerge and everyone's connection to it. Gina, Kym's grandmother and Carolyn, Evie's mother are at loggerheads over a patch of scrap land behind Elder house. Kym and Evie form a new friendship and investigate the history of the house together. A child's shoe is found behind a panel of Nell and Chris's bedroom. The disturbance of its hiding place leads to strange noises in the house. The book concludes with the talisman being replaced and Kym discovering information from Carolyn as to her father's death.
