An unsettling read.

I was expecting a ghost story and I guess in part that's what I got but there was so much more tucked away in the pages of The Hiding Place that made for an unsettling read.

Creepy and scarily atmospheric, it's a haunting exploration of Motherhood that delves deep into the Mother/Daughter relationship of it's (quite frankly) shady characters. Each seemed to have something to hide but which should the reader distrust?

I found the portrayal of the mother/daughter relationships really interesting, and these definitely added to the unease and tension that was apparent thoughout but for me Elder House, where the majority of the plot takes place, absolutely took on the role of the novel's sinister main protagonist. With it's harrowing past, it's secrets and superstitions it was a constant uncomfortable presence - let's just say, you wouldn't find me staying there! 👻
