When Nell, Chris and his 12 year old daughter Maude, return to Nell's home town of Whitby, for a break away from recent events back home, little do they know it won't be the relaxing holiday they had hoped for.
Having rented out Elder House, for the forseeable, Nell and Maude soon realise that the house has a very dark secret, and they aren't the only souls in there.
Having previously had an amazing relationship with her step daughter, Maude, past events have caused a crack in their bond, that is proving difficult to repair. Though she loves Maude, Nell is desperate for a child of her own. But would she give anything to get what she wants!
The story isn't a slow burner by any means, it builds up the suspense & tension perfectly. It draws you in, until eventually the characters own back stories are revealed, and their links to one another properly explained.
This is an atmospheric read, that gave me the eebie jeebies in parts. It also got bonus points because it is set in one of my favourite places, Whitby.
The hiding place is the perfect October read.
