This isn’t my usual genre of book. Initially I found it slow, my interest was piqued when I found similarities to Whitby which was the thing that kept me reading.
Nell has returned to the town she grew up in with her husband Chris and step daughter Maude. They are staying in a holiday let, Elder House which has Nell immediately has reservations about. There are strange markings in the attic, a damp smell and Nell has feelings they are not all me in the house. The relationship between Nell and Maude starts to become strained, then Chris has to return to work leaving them alone in the house. Nell starts to learn more about the history of the house from a neighbour Gina while trying to dodge Carolyn who claims to have been at school with her. As the story develops it seems there is more to these people who are also connected to Elder House. The book does develop and by the end I couldn’t put it down. A good read for Halloween.
