I read this book while on holidays, at the seaside, staying in a rental cottage. That's my first 3 mistakes. I could relate to many aspects of the book and family dynamics as I also had a teenager with me! Even picking sea glass on the beach reminded me of the book :) and nervously listening for any creaks and noises in the cottage. The book follows a story of Nell who goes on a holiday with her husband and stepdaughter to her hometown. The quiet seaside town seems spooky and mysterious. Nell is not happy to be back and avoids the locals. There are also weird things happening in the house from things going missing to creaking floorboards and hidden cupboards inside walls it is all very spooky. Also locals talk about the house being haunted. I'm happy to report I didn't see and ghosts in my holiday cottage and was very glad to come back home and finish reading this book in peace.
