Nell, her husband and stepdaughter, Maude, rent a holiday cottage by the sea to get away and have a rest from everyday life. Nell grew up in the small town and has mixed feelings about returning to the area. She is befriended by a neighbour, who want to know her business. The cottage has been empty for a good while and holds many secrets. From the start Nell, and Maude feel very uncomfortable and the atmosphere is very creepy. Strange marks appear in the roof beams and also a hiding place in another room conceals a strange object.
Gradually the house reveals its secrets making them both uneasy and spellbound. The house continues to reveal its own secrets.
