This second book by Amanda Mason is even better than the first, the Wayward Girls, and I loved that one.
Full to the brim with historical fears, superstitions and the real life horrors of difficult relationships, this haunting novel has all the elements of a great domestic horror.
I love the intricate and elaborate style of Mason's writing. Her books are complicated and slow, but with a building feeling of dread and intrigue. I get on really well with her pacing and approach to narrative.

The characters were well built and realistic, even to the point of being irritating. Maude made me want to tear my hair out, she was the most horrifically real angsty pre-teen.
The relationship between Nell and Chris was frustrating and infuriating, and all too relatable.

My only complaint is that the POVs got very bitty a little too early on for my taste. From around halfway, every chapter was broken into short sections from multiple character viewpoints, where I would rather have had short chapters from one or two perspectives until nearer the end.

Overall, I loved this slow-burn haunting story, and am really looking forward to whatever Amanda Mason writes next.
