Thank you to Readers First for this copy of The Hiding Place to review. This genre of book is definitely not my usual choice but I have just finished it and really enjoyed it. Set in Whitby it is the story of jewellery maker Nell, her husband Chris and Chris’s daughter Maude who rent a cottage in Nell’s previous home town. The cottage has something amiss from the outset and, as the book unfolds, the secrets and history of the cottage emerge to extreme consequences.

The book, whilst a chilling tale of superstition and ritual, has deeper layers of step-motherhood, childhood friendship, teen age years and so much more. I warmed to most of the characters, particularly Nell.

I loved the cover of the book, the windows, the objects and the shiny sections. This will be very appealing in a book shop display. It will also be a great Halloween read in the coming weeks.
