What a wonderfully written first impression.
I've not read anything by this author before. I have no idea if this is a one off or part of a series or even exactly what part of Roman history it is set in, but none of that matters!

Mr Sidebottom instantly transported me to Ancient Rome in just a few pages, and straight into the thick of things with little introduction to the plot or main character but a shedful of intrigue and interspersed with little details that enable me to picture everything without being dragged down under weighty paragraphs of character and scene setting that is often a trap with historical fiction.

And with just the right blend of action and information and mystery to draw a reader in right from the start!

Not my normal reading choice but I enjoyed this first impression and was genuinely disappointed when i ran out of pages to read. If that's not a sign of a book with a 5-Star potential I don't know what is.
