The author Harry Sidebottom is a respected academic and a prolific writer of historical fiction set in the time of the Roman Empire. In particular his series Warrior of Rome and Throne of the Caesars have taken the reader around much of the Empire and the Eternal City, while introducing us into the complicated, sometime sinister and dangerous politics of the Romans. This stand alone novel brings back into our sight the hero of the Warrior of Rome series, Ballista, who finds about a plot to assassinate the Emperor and he has to get to Gallienus to warn him. Unfortunately the local City Watch, law enforcers among things, will try anything to stop him. Like a Roman Jack Bauer he has to fight his way by any and every means. The author, as a teacher of ancient history, has a wonderful knowledge of life in all it's splendour and deprivation and his descriptions are full-on and fascinating and really brings to life this fascinating city. The only minor criticism I have is the way the main character is brought to life over the whole book. If you hadn't read the Warrior of Rome series, you would have little knowledge of Ballista. Otherwise this is great story and would highly recommend it.
