Take all the key concepts of a modern thriller. An assassination plot, a conspiracy reaching to the highest levels of power, and an underdog with only a day or two to unravel it and save the life of his friend. Sounds pretty good right?

Now take those concepts and stick them in Ancient Rome, with no technology or communications, a society that views you("you" meaning the main character) as a barbarian, and no idea who is a plotter, oh and that friend of yours who you need to save, he just happens to be the Emperor.

Harry Sidebottom has written a brilliant fast paced book here that should appeal to fans of thrillers and historical fiction-alike.
I'm not a expert on ancient Rome so whilst I can't comment on the accuracy of the facts I can say that he does a wonderful job of explaining key information for those like myself who are less informed, without getting bogged down or diverting from the plot.

The story evolves and I found it engaging and very well written. I could imagine what was going on and liked the extra details and snippets that he threw in every now and again that really brought ancient Rome to life, and not just a textbook story setting.

I would certainly recommend picking this book up as I felt it was a real page turner.

(Also the cover looks much better irl than in the readersfirst picture)
