I love ancient Rome, but for some odd reason haven't read many books set in this era. This one was an excellent one to get me right into the mood for more, relentless action from the outset that never lets up for the whole book.

As a German Barbarian our hero Ballista shouldn't be too bothered about a plot to assassinate the current Roman emperor, many have been killed before, he's even had a hand in a couple of them. But this one is different, they are friends. So when he is sent to hear about the plot from an informant he wasn't expecting the trap that was set was also meant for him, he arrives to find the informant dead and realises within seconds he could be next. Barely thinking he springs into action and sets into motion an epic cat and mouse chase across Rome to try and warn his friend before the plotters can spring into action at the close of the games the next day.

The chase takes us deep into the heart of Rome, in all it's grime and splendour. Jumping from ornate gardens to the murk of the alleyways, being chased by the city watch and a citywide announcement for his arrest who can he turn to for help?

If you are interested in an episode of 24 set in ancient Rome then this is certainly for you.
