I don't read much about the WWII as I find it difficult to stomach the images of horrors people had to endure during those times. However, what I found extraordinary with this chapter is a strong sense of friendship and camaraderie that the nine women featured in the story were able to maintain and rely on to get through the harrowing hardships. The humanity, the bright spirit of each woman shone through the pages and really made me want to find out - just how did they manage to get through the impossible? What were they like? How has the experience changed them? An unexpectedly gripping read even for someone averse to war-related literature.
