The story of Helene goes between factual account and storytelling and can be a hard read with some of the harrowing experiences and torture she endured particularly when having her tooth yanked out by players.
The novel uses a fair amount of facts and figures but not too much that it overwhelms the flow of the novel and the relationship built between the reader and the heroines and their account of war and resistance.
I would definitely have bought this book as it gives a scarily real picture of what some people went through during one of the most terrible wars and their strength and determination to fight this during some of the most unimaginable ordeals. I would like to have learnt more about the other 8 women. Brilliant but harrowing read.
