The only thing that stops me from giving this book the full five stars is that on occasion I found myself a bit lost as to who was being discussed. That said, I feel like we got to go on a journey with each individual person as well as the journey they embarked upon as a group. I also enjoyed reading a little about what it was like for Germans living next to these horrors, sometimes knowing and sometimes not. It's certainly made me want to read more about this.

This book is made all the more poignant by the personal relationship of the author to the people involved. Her frank discussion of the impacts that being in concentration camps had on the children and grandchildren of the camp survivors was very interesting, and not something I'd read about before despite it clearly being very significant.

I liked how she placed each character in their own chapter so that it was easier to follow who was being discussed and I appreciated the mix of factual reporting and the storytelling style that the journey itself was written in. This is not necessarily an easy read but if you are interested in learning more about the experiences of people who were in the resistance and in concentration camps then you should definitely read this.
