This is the first non-fiction book that I have read in a very long time but I'm very glad that I read it. To hear the story of these nine incredible women from someone who has done research and spoken to some of the women or the women's families is amazing. I liked the structure of the book and how it told of the escape but also intermittently flashed back to their time in the camps and before the war.
One thing that I found particularly interesting with this book over others on the same topic is that this book also talked about the difficulty that the women, and other survivors, faced after the war. We assume that once the war was over and people are reunited that they will return to 'normal' life but this book tells of the long-lasting impact that the war had on the women as well as their children. This book tells of how the women hardly spoke of their experiences because they were made to feel that no one wanted to hear it at the time.
Definitely worth the read but it does take some time to read.
