I was so looking forward to reading this book. I had read the Tattooist of Auschwitz and was expecting something similar. As you can imagine it was truly a harrowing story to tell and it felt even more real as the author was related to one of The Nine.
It must of been difficult to have researched this learning what her relative went through and how she suffered. But I think she did her proud. In some parts I felt it went a bit factual and I lost a bit of the emotion for the story. There were a couple of surprising bits where when she wrote about the guards and particularly one that her relative got close to, it showed the Germans in a different light. It made me realise that they too were living through the war, that they too had families that they lost and had homes that were destroyed and not all Germans agreed that what Hitler did was right. It opened my eyes that they too also suffered in the hands of their leader.
