Finally got round to reading The Nine by Gwen Strauss! This has been on my to be read pile for a long, long time. The Nine is a story of how nine women survived during World War 2. However, this is a story unlike any other.
The writer is the great niece of one of the women and this is a true story on how these women, some of whom were just teenagers, fought back against the Nazis. Each of these women, felt they needed to do something and consequently joined either the French or Dutch resistance. However, they were each caught whilst carrying out acts of resistance. After being tortured, they were all sent East to a concentration camp. This is where they formed a deep friendship and vowed to escape. As the end of 1945 drew to a close, they were all forced on a death march and thus began a bid for freedom and survival. I liked this book and found it was a powerful story. However, I do feel that there has been a glut of these types of books and sometimes it's the same story told with different characters. However, The Nine was not that book. An enjoyable read.
