Nine Lives is the true story of nine women who escaped from one of the “Death Marches” that happened towards the end of World War 2.
The women were all ordinary people who joined the Resistance movements in France and Holland and took part in heroic actions against the might of the German army before they were captured and sent to the brutal Labour camps
The story of their escape and journey is interwoven with the backstories of all nine of the escapees and this adds to the overall book.
The author has undertaken considerable research and this shows through without distracting from the main theme of the book. In fact I felt it added to my enjoyment.
The stories of women who fought against the odds during World War 2 are not as abundant as the ones about men but Nine Lives is definitely one of the most interesting books on the War and the Death Marches that I have read.
