An interesting and thought provoking book about nine women who escape from the Germans during the Second World War. I’ve read the first review and feel I want to know more. What brave women, would any of us be as brave today?
The book is written by the great niece of one of the survivors. There is the stark reality of how the women were made to walk on a death march and of the brutality of guards. It is balanced as there were guard who showed some sympathy to the women. The women were in Ravensbruck and the sheer numbers of those who were killed is startling.
I have read quite a lot of books about the Second World War and this is well written, describing the girls, their feelings of loss and bravery. It develops their longing to escape and return home to a world where they are safe and loved; it also shows their bravery and perseverance in appalling circumstances. A book which we should all read.
