I like a story which starts with a dramatic whoosh! Martyn Waites stuffs his first atmospheric chapter with plenty of lyrical description which carried me away even though there was no actual action. It was a perfect match to the cover illustration. And then he settles down to introducing characters and his setting of a run-down Cornish coastal village.
