Well written, with evocative description, though perhaps sometimes more than necessary. A lot of emphasis on how isolated and desolate the setting is, which provides both safety and danger to the two main characters.
The mysteries are set up nicely, and Lila has a well developed voice, though we don't yet have much of a sense of Tom's character.
