This book surprised me as it was more folk horror than traditional crime fiction. Set in post-Brexit Cornwall, it felt very current despite the references to the Old Religion. The story was atmospheric and chilling, offering just enough detail and complexity to feel satisfying, mysterious and compelling. The plot felt well structured and unfolded at a good pace. I particularly enjoyed the depth of the characters and the unlikely friendship that formed between the main characters of Tom and Lila. I was intrigued by their backstories and found myself empathizing with them very quickly. However, I did question Tom's motives at times. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to crime fiction fans looking for something a little different.
