The Old Religion is a reasonably fast paced book which is part crime/ part folk horror/ part humour. Unfortunately, I found it a bit cliched with none of the main characters engaging or believable.

The main character is an ex squaddie; ex undercover police officer who is in the Witness Protection programme. So far so good however some of the things he does and/ or allows to happen are just not realistic or believable even allowing for some literary licence.

I also managed to work out about 95% of the ending well before the end of the book. The other bit didn't really add much value.

Overall I was disappointed with the Old Religion that at times read like the lost Midsomer Murder episode.
