In The Old Religion, we meet Tom Kilgannon. He’s living a simple, quiet life in a small village in Cornwall. He works in a pub and largely keeps himself to himself.

Very soon it becomes obvious that he’s left something or someone behind. He’s experienced trauma (he has a therapist) and he’s obviously trying to heal and redeem himself in his eyes.

When he finds a young girl in his kitchen, he gets drawn into the plots and intrigue of the local community.

Written with the intention of being ‘folk horror’, the pace of the book keeps you turning the pages. Short, snappy chapters from varying viewpoints, with different stories that ultimately converge.

However, it lacks a bit of punch. There’s some suspense, but it isn’t maintained. Mystery shrouds some of the characters and their actions but some of it is never resolved.

It’s a good book and an enjoyable read, but not a great book for me.
