This book is set in an isolated village near Newquay. The tin mines have all closed down and the village has nothing to attract tourists. The remaining villagers are desperate for a new marina to be sited there otherwise St Petroc will not have a future.
An ex policeman, Tom Killgannon has chosen to live in St Petroc when he left the force and is working as a bar man.
This book is dark and atmospheric. The villagers are vulnerable to pagan beliefs (the old religion) and cult figures whilst at the same time affected by the modern scourges of drugs, Brexit, Trump and Boris.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and could well imagine it as a film with Tom saving the day just in the nick of time.
The climax was somewhat predictable and the explanations for various characters behaviours in Part 4 of the book somewhat tedious and anticlimactic.
Nevertheless, I shall now be looking out for books by Tania Carver which were also written by Martin Waites.
