The backdrop to this story is a disease called `The Plague' , and it makes me think of what the whole world is going through now with the new virus that is scaring us all silly. So it just goes to show that not much really changes throughout the history of mankind.
However, there is more to this story than people trying to cope with the plague. It is in part a romance with the main characters being in love , but they have to be parted because Nicholas is called away to go on a dangerous mission abroad and his lover, Bianca, has to stay in London . They are both in the medical profession, such as it was in those days with him being a sort of early doctor and her being a pharmacist.
The Plague is not the only problem they have to contend with because these are the days of superstition , witchcraft and religious prejudices.
