Exciting opening with a great female character

As a fan of historical mysteries and historical fiction in general, there's a lot about this book that speaks to me. I love the exciting opening and the female protagonist. Also, the period setting is intriguing and some of the issues, such as opposition to the slave trade, have an uncanny contemporary relevance. I haven't read the first book in the series but this excerpt from its sequel makes me want to.
