Attica Morgan and her ally Jemmy Avery are in France and carrying out rescues of aristocrats who are against slavery from execution by pro-slavery elements within French society. These operations are not authorised by their spymaster but are rather a bit of private enterprise that are unofficially sanctioned as they help to maintain the instability in France since the fall of the Bastille.
Recalled to London Attica finds that her uncle Lord Pole is tasking her for a new mission that will also increase the instability in France and prevent the Rights of Man being signed by the French King. Returning to France Attica find Atherton waiting for her with a proposal of marriage which for a while acts as a source of bad feeling between her and Avery. This is the least of their problems as Attica is determined to free a slave that she encounters while on her mission. This plays to her own history and in some ways is her weakness – a weakness that Robespierre seeks to exploit while he pursues his own mission to ensure that fall of the King.
This is an action packed tale but for me focus on the legend of the Scarlet Pimpernel is a bit of a distraction from the story as a whole.
