A good yarn
I do enjoy historical fiction and this is certainly well researched. The premise involving spies, slave trade and politics is very clever.
The central character and narrator is a likeable mix of dare devil and strong morals. I enjoyed her initial introduction where the reader assumes she is a man. Prejudices are questioned regularly. The title of the novel relates to the infamous Scarlet Pimpernel and characters such as Jemmy exemplify the desire to create a more equal society.
Settings are very evocative. The writer creates for example, a real sense of Paris, extremes of wealth and poverty. Similarly London is conveyed through vivid detail.
This work is very topical, dealing with the slave trade. A good read.
