The Scarlet Code is a fun, historical thriller and spy novel, which is action packed from the very first chapter. Attica is an excellent protagonist, she is clever, warm and sympathetic to the revolutionary cause, the back drop to this novel. Jemmy is a great counterpart to Attica, and someone I really rooted for!

I liked the story being told around real events of the French Revolution, in this case the Women’s March on Versailles, as it gave the novel an element of truth to it. The French Revolution is also a brilliant time period to set this style of historical novel as it was such a fraught and treacherous time for commoners and aristocrats alike, that it gives the story an element of danger from the very beginning, and causes problems for all of the characters.

The Scarlet Code is the second novel in CS Quinn’s Revolution Spy, and I would recommend reading The Bastille Spy first, to get a sense of the characters and their history and their relationships. It may not be necessary but it would definitely help.

Overall a great historical romp, with short chapters packed with action that makes it difficult to put down!
