I started this book expecting a crime novel but it turned out to be an adventure story which had a smattering of murder thrown in. On the other hand, if I’d known this I would probably not have picked it up and I would have missed out on an easy, enjoyable read which avoids being a dry period piece.
The basic ingredients of the plot would not be out of place in a James Bond Movie: secret agents extracting enemies of the state from a country on the verge of revolution. There are even some gadgets thrown in, all appropriate for the time period! I don’t know much about eighteenth century France but there was nothing that jumped out that shouldn’t have been there.
Attica feels like a modern heroine, she is quick thinking, resourceful and courageous, as well as an expert swordswoman. At the same time, her background as the daughter of a slave makes her very much of her time. I enjoyed her friendship with Jemmy as they sparked off each other and it felt like a partnership of equals, unlike her relationship with Atherton. This might be because he only had a small cameo and I haven’t read the previous book, but I struggled to buy into her dilemma about whether to marry him.
I will definitely be reading more in this series!
