I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series, ‘The Bastille spy’ and this one was just as enjoyable. Having received the First Look, I went out and bought the kindle edition. The Scarlet Code links the events of the French Revolution immediately following the fall of the Bastille with the politics of slavery. Attica Morgan, born a slave but now (just about) a member of the English aristocracy spies for England and as a sideline , as the Scarlet Pimpernel, rescues abolitionists rather than emigrés: The Terror hasn’t yet taken hold. Attica’s principles often collide with the intentions of her spy masters. Their aim in thwarting French slave traders is more about gaining trade routes than about the abolition of the trade. Attica Is a thoroughly modern heroine , independent, bisexual, trained by the Sicilian Assassins school. ( Couldn’t help thinking of Terry Pratchett at that point!). The action, with Attica and her pirate companion, Jemmy fairly gallops along but can be a little confusing. There is almost too much going on. There are some nasty villains, including of course Robespierre. That’s some discreet sex and a rather underwritten love triangle...not involving the same people! I suspect it’s quite well researched and it’s a ripping yarn even if a little on the far-fetched side! Enjoyed the inconclusive resolution to the ‘romance’ and the indication of more to come. Certainly encouraged me to look at other books by this author. One star dropped because it was over complicated in places. Could have used some editing
