ow do you deal with the emotions of a child you have raised for 14 years not biologically being yours? How do you navigate the mine field of families and love when the daughter you’ve raised does not share your genetics? What happens when one child has a life altering disability.

Caroline Bond explores this and more in The Second Child. Phil, Sarah and Anne are the parents that find out the daughters they’ve raised from birth were mixed up in hospital and out there somewhere is their real biological daughter.

Phil and Sarah have brought up Lauren their daughter with RTS, a genetic condition that affects her cognitive function , mobility and her life forever. They love her and always will but when they find out Lauren is not biologically theirs they realise they have another daughter out there, one who is not disabled, a daughter they always dreamt of.

Anne is a single mother looking after Rosie her football loving and estranged daughter, their relationship is strained. They don’t really get on. She is all she has though and when Anne gets told she has a daughter out there who is genetically hers can she look past her disability and love her too?

A beautifully written novel that explores the emotions and thoughts of all caught up in a nightmare it’s a must read that will have you falling in love with each character in their own way and wanting to read on and on to see how a situation that is beyond your own comprehension can be resolved for all involved.

The jumping back and too from each perspective takes a little getting use to but it ultimately adds to your reading experience. The chapters are short but compelling and it’s a book I will not be forgetting anytime soon.
