This is an entirely different type of book for me (I usually read YA, supernatural based books and the occasional Thriller) but I’m definitely glad that I read ‘The Second Child’ as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

From the very beginning I felt for Sarah and Phil over the awful situation that they found themselves to be in. It’s a pretty terrible scenario to try and imagine – finding out that your child isn’t really your own and that out there, somewhere, there’s another oblivious child that is. For anyone it’s bound to bring conflicting thoughts and feelings to the surface as they worry about what will now happen to the daughter they’ve raised but are also curious about the one that is biologically their own. Sarah and Phil’s situation is complicated further still however as their daughter, Lauren, has RTS. It’s a disability that I hadn’t heard of before but I thought the author managed to do a good job of covering the various ways that it can affect an individual, showed how Sarah and Phil adapted their lives to cope and gave Lauren her own personality despite her difficulties with communication.

I thought that the characters in it were very well portrayed with their thoughts and feelings in this difficult situation seeming quite believable. The varying points of view were very interesting as they helped show a more rounded view of the entire situation. It was eye-opening to see what the different characters were thinking and feeling from their own points of view.

There was one part of this story that came as quite a surprise to me. The whole thing seemed well paced, interesting and was ultimately very readable as I wanted to see what would happen next, hoping for a resolution that wouldn’t break everybody’s hearts.

I hope to see more of Caroline Bond’s writing in the future.
