A nice meandering start introducing us to a few of the characters and their every day lives, just the usual things you and me get up to. Then it all goes pear shaped right at the end of the extract as presumably the person who was last seen arguing with the cafe owner and pelting off down the street has returned with violent intentions as the character whose eyes we were currently seeing the action through has dived on top of her daughter and grandson to shield them. From what, we are left wondering.
An enjoyable writing style hooked me in, and knowing from the blurb there is some sort of hostage situation going on we know everyone is in peril. Hope the homeless man is ok, it's his birthday after all!
