I love Charity Norman’s work and this book looks like another fantastic read. The first look felt far, far too short and I’ve been left with so many questions after just that short time. What happened in Neil’s life for him to lose his wife and his home? Does his desire to go to the bookies give a clue? What will the results be from Abi’s IVF? Will she be able to mount a defence for the young mother in the dock? Will she want to? What horrific things have happened in Mutesi’s past? Are they secrets from her son and daughter in law? Is her job a form of atonement for something?
All of that and I haven’t even got as far as the main plot of the novel! A man has burst into the cafe where these three very different characters have all converged on that cold Monday morning. Mutesi’s instinctive reaction to shield her family leads us to believe that the man has a weapon. Who was he referring to when he came in the first time?
As always the simple style of cover is a winner. The broken cup signifying the setting, the brokenness of the characters and the hideous fracture that a hostage situation will cause.
I simply MUST read the rest of this novel.
