This story centres round a cafe near Balham station in London called, "The Tuckbox", each chapter is headed by a characters name and gives their story and version of events. We have Neil a homeless guy who used to be married and was a teacher but unfortunately he had a big gambling problem, Abi a solicitor who is on her way to court, running late that morning and everyone is holding her up, Mutesi who comes from Rwanda, works in a care home, Sam who is a troubled young man with a disturbing past, who can't seem to get over the loss of his father, is probably the main character and Eliza who is a hostage and crisis negotiator, who is assigned to this case.
Many people are caught up in this tense storyline, including dogs tied up outside and children, so it makes you feel anxious for their safety, although I did find it a bit dragging in the centre of the book, especially with Sam's story and found myself hoping it would hurry up and do something exciting. As the story comes to an end, the storylines of each person comes to an end too, some happy and some sad. But these people who are brought together, end up being together both in spirit and throughout their lives.
