There were a number of characters introduced in the first couple of chapters, none of which were developed to any depth.

The prologue was intriguing with a hand being found in the Thames but this excitement dropped off a bit in the following chapters. The story is set at the end of the 16th century and the premise so far is that a Dr, Nicholas, who has been off-grid since the death of his wife and child returns to his Suffolk hometown.

We are also introduced to some characters in a London apothecary and tavern, who know Nicholas although in what capacity is not made clear.

Not much else happened - if I had the book I would give it more of a chance and read a bit more but I don't really care enough about the characters yet.
