Nicholas Shelby is a doctor during Elizabethan era, who ends up not doing much medical work, while caught up in a treason. I must confess I was expecting more medieval surgical procedures and torturing methods, a somehow darker novel. It turned out to be, for me, a little bit hard to get into at first, but from half way through, you'll be fully engaged and in love with both Nicholas and the bright, brave Bianca (an example of women power, especially considering the time). Between the right and wrong, politics and religious views, it seems like a truthful portrait of England during the Tudor's, a period I personally find fascinating. The writing itself is pleasant, turning it into a deep, slow reading novel.
Considering I haven't read the prequel, there's a fair chance I would have enjoyed it more from the first page if I had done so, as Nichola's former love isn't explored as I'd hope. I might just buy the prequel, now.
