I was wary as to whether this book would be as good as the first in the series but I was very pleasantly surprised! The fact that it was set in the Tudor era (1591) was a definite plus for me due to studying it at A level and historical fiction being one of my favourite genres.
The characters within the novel were dragged into murder and conspiracy, both of which were hard to solve in these times, thus taking the storyline on some interesting twists and turns.
Although this book is part of a series (which will hopefully continue!), the lives and backgrounds of the characters are explained so well that this could easily be read as a standalone, though the first book was just as good and I'm definitely glad that I read that as well!
