I thoroughly enjoyed this second outing for physician Nichola Shelby. Following a few months on from the previous book, this can be read as a standalone, and sees us back in Elizabethan London.
Nicholas is due to see if he can get his physician's licence back, meanwhile his friend/landlady Bianca has received her apothecary licence.
Life is continuing on the bankside when Bianca's cousin unexpectedly sails in from Italy. After he gets attacked, she realises he is involved in some kind of secret plot.
Simultaneously Nicholas is asked to give his opinion on a visiting physician from the continent, who is suspected to be a bit of a charlatan.
Neither realises that the two are linked and that there is an audacious plot to oust Elizabeth from the throne.
With lots of adventure, peril and a smattering of romance this books trots along at a fearsome pace. A really enjoyable romp through history.
