Having read the first book in the series, I was looking forward to this one. Having said that, it would be perfectly easy to read this without having read the first - there is enough explanation to make everything clear.
I was not disappointed at all, it was every bit as good as the first novel. We have a great sense of the feelings, colour, sights, smells and violence of the time and the place, and the main characters are flawed but likeable.
Nicolas and Bianca have to deal with their usual trials, tribulations and near-death experiences in order to right a catalogue of wrongs and avert catastrophe. The plot may be far-fetched, but it is extremely readable, and I was rooting for them all the way. Great book.
